Tensioner on Duplex Chains
I notice thre are the Duplex Timing chains, but no tensioner available for a duplex chain.. Is it not required, or will a single one do the trick?

death rattle???
It may be worth checking the timing chain tensioner hasent snapped as this happened on my girlfriends one,and no one could work out why the engine was making a tappety noise.Untill some one suggested checking the timing chain when we took the cover off half the tensioner fell out due to being worn through problem sorted.Although it had caused one of the pistons to connect with the valve.
Worth checking as they are dirt cheap and easy to do.

Timing Chain
The vernier gears are a good idea, but you can achieve the same thing by using an offset woodruff key. Minispares do them from 1 degree to 9 degrees. Of course, there's no adjustment, so you have to measure the timing with the standard key, calculate the offset you want, order it from Minispares, and hope when it arrives that it's the right one!
Also, you could maybe fit a timing chain tensioner to minimise the rattle? Not sure if there is such a thing for an 850, but it would surely be possible to adapt one from another engine.

A+ engine or not
Hi, I'm confused about the engine in my 1979 mini1000 . the engine number is 99H 791P 379019. is this an A+ or not . It has the later type timing chain with a tensioner fitted. when I've looked up about the A+ it says it should have flat top pistons but mine has dished pistons. inside the clutch cover is a manufacturing date of 8/78. I believe this is the original engine. were A+ units fitted before 1980? or were parts changed to the later speck when old stocks ran out?
if anyone has any information could you let me know
thanks

timing chain
so does that mean that this is an a plus engine or is it an origianal?
i've took the timing cover off and it has a simplex chain and a tensioner fitted, is this standard even on normal a series engines?
thanks for info

MG Metro engine into Mini
OK,
I've done all the easy bits and am left with two problems/choices.
Engine breather - The MG lump has the breather on the timing chain cover and Calver's technical pages say I can flatten the circular canister to clear a Mini fan but this does seem a bit brutal. However, the transfer (drop) gear housing I'm using has the hole in the top and is tapped to take a breather and I have a plastic type canister that fits. I can't remember if this was part of the Metro setup anyway or if I sourced it elsewhere but which is best, or do I need both for this engine? If I only need the transfer gear one, is the 998 timing cover without a breather, a straight fit to replace the Metro one (assuming both are 11 bolt covers for a single row chain with additional tensioner strip)?
Oil cooler - the MG Metro used a water to oil cooler sandwiched between the filter housing and filter canister but crude measurements suggest this will make the filter canister foul the subframe in a Mini (or at least make it impossible to unscrew in-situ). Is it best to abandon this and use a conventional oil cooler, or is there a shorter filter available (say from another car with same thread, same diameter, but not so tall) that would work.
Your thoughts would be much appreciated !!!
Rod.

timing chain A plus engine?
on looking for a replacement timing chain for my 1979 mini 1000 i've found that an 11 hole timing cover should mean its an a plus engine, it also has a tensioner.
the engine number matches that in the log book so presuming its origanal.
i always thought a plus engines where a much later thing, fitted to metros
have i got an a plus engine or is it likeley to be standard?
engine number is 99h792ph024897

Mini 2000 TPI erratic idle
Barry I have checked all the vaccum lines , the timing sprockets , tensioner and chain ...
Everything seems to be ok..But I noticed that the engine is breathing through the oil cap , is this normal?
